Horse Poem # 34

if I stop at night
going to her stable
tip-toeing straw
knocking buckets
will she not be there sleeping?

if she stops at night
coming to my window
nudging glass
licking caulk
will I not be there sleeping?

what if I’m out at night
going to her stable
and she’s out at night
coming to my window?
what if we took separate paths
around the house?

will I hear her
from her stable
nudging glass
licking caulk?

will she hear me
from my window
tip-toeing straw
knocking buckets?

what if I’m out at night
crying in her empty stable
and she’s out at night
crying in my empty bed?
will we take still take separate paths
around the house
back to our beds?

what if during the day
in the sun
with people around
I asked her to switch
me in the stable
her in the bed
to shake things up?

is that the kind of shaking
we need?
